Health & Wellness

As we navigate the various aspects of our lives, the Health & Welfare Committee continues to play a pivotal role in fostering an environment of well-being within our chapter. The committee actively facilitates an open forum at our Chapter meetings, providing a platform for Brothers to share and prioritize both physical and mental health.

Open Forum on Health Matters

During our Chapter meetings, the Health & Welfare Committee creates a space for Brothers to report on their physical and mental health. It’s a valuable opportunity for our members to share updates on kept appointments for physicals, check-ups, and follow-up appointments. A growing list of Brothers’ names is presented on a PowerPoint slide at each meeting, encouraging those not on the list to schedule appointments with their doctors. Additionally, the Trenton Alumni Chapter has leaned into the Grand Chapter’s “Are You OK?” Initiative for a number of reasons, including the fact that we experience a loss due to suicide.

Promoting Health and Wellness

Our commitment to health extends beyond meetings. The committee provides healthy recipes, organizes regular walks with Brothers, and conducts home visits for those who are not doing well. These initiatives ensure that all Brothers have the support and encouragement they need to maintain their health.

Prioritizing Mental Health: Are You OK?

The Trenton Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is proud to lean into the Are You OK? initiative promoted by the Grand Chapter. This critical program addresses the unique mental health challenges faced by Black men; a conversation long overdue in our community. With 21% of Black men reporting mental health concerns but only 39% receiving adequate care, the need for culturally responsive treatments and support has never been more urgent. These disparities are further compounded by systemic racism, with 20% of Black men more likely to experience severe psychological distress and as many as 74% of trauma-exposed Black males requiring mental health services.

As a chapter, we are committed to breaking the stigma around mental health, fostering open dialogue, and advocating for accessible, culturally sensitive care. Together, let’s uplift our community by prioritizing mental health, encouraging brothers to seek help when needed, and creating safe spaces for healing and growth. Your mental health matters. #AreYouOK #MentalHealthAwareness
