Past Polemarchs

The term Polemarch has its roots in ancient Greek history. The word is derived from the Greek words “polemos” (meaning war) and “archon” (meaning leader or ruler). Originally, a Polemarch was a senior military official or a commander of an army in ancient Athens. The Polemarch was responsible for leading the military forces and had significant authority over military matters.

In the context of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, the title Polemarch is used to designate the president or leader of a chapter. The role involves guiding the chapter, presiding over meetings, and ensuring the overall well-being and direction of the group. The adaptation of the term reflects the fraternity’s values of leadership, responsibility, and service, drawing a connection between the historical role of a leader in wartime and the modern role of guiding and leading a fraternity chapter.

The Legacy of Strategic Leadership

Kappa Alpha Psi was founded in Bloomington, Indiana, in the early 1900s, a time and place where Black people were not exactly welcome. The founders had to think with military strategy, much like the ancient Polemarchs, to navigate and overcome the pervasive challenges of systemic racism and social exclusion. This strategic thinking not only helped establish the fraternity but also laid a foundation for resilience, leadership, and brotherhood that continues to guide us today.

The Polemarchs serve as anchors for the Chapter ensuring that we never drift from the principles, values, goals, and objectives of the Fraternity.

The living Past Polemarchs support the growth and development of the presiding Polemarch by sharing their wisdom, and experience and lending their leadership when called upon. Past Polemarchs Council was convened in 2015 and continues today to sustain this invaluable resource for wisdom and guidance.
